Wow…
My new attending on Peds Heme/Onc is…interesting. He’s an older guy, the type who talks slowly and deliberately but is rather dry and quick-witted. He says a lot of things that I think people would be surprised to hear from him (well, from anyone really) if they didn’t already know him. He’s sharp, funny, and admittedly a bit lazy in his own way; he told us today that his “most favoritest thing” is to send patients home. Not because that’s where they want to be, but because he wants to work less. One of those older guys. He also tells lots of stories about things he’s been through.
One of his stories ranks up there among the strangest stories I’ve ever heard. Several years back, this particular attending was walking around on campus (I’m not 100% sure it was ours), and was approached by a man trying to mug him. He’s an old war vet so he didn’t just let the guy do what he wanted and was promptly shot in the head. Not too terribly hurt, he headed over to a phone and instinctively knew he shouldn’t call his wife because she’d be mad at him. Instead, the number he decided to dial was the hospital’s page operator to tell her he’d been shot in the head and that he needed assistance.
