Randy: I can't put my arms down!

Sitting around in the lounge this morning to get check-out for the day, I answered several phone calls from other residents saying they’d be late because the roads were bad outside.  I had no idea how cold/wet/icy things were since I’d been stuck in the hospital almost 24 hours, so I started having visions of my car struggling to make it up a five degree incline (maybe it was mildly steeper than that a couple years ago but damn it was frustrating).  Even our attending, Dr. Saxena, arrived quite late this morning for rounds and was relieved he’d made it in safely.

So when it was time for me to go home, I figured I’d better bundle up (for the warm and toasty 21 degrees outside before figuring in wind chill).  I was wearing a long-sleeved shirt with a t-shirt over it, put on my scarf, zipped up my fleece jacket, pulled on my down jacket over it, tugged my hat on, and struggled to bend my arms so I could pull my gloves onto my hands.  I thought I’d be outside for some time scraping ice off my car and I’d need to be prepared.

Once I escaped the hospital, my torso didn’t even feel the cold, which was totally awesome (my legs, on the other hand…).  I warmed up my car and got the ice-scraper out when I realized my dad had made me take along one of those de-icer cans when I was home Sunday.  Since I was tired, sleepy, and post-call, I figured I’d see how well the thing worked.

DUDE, that stuff is freakin’ magic!  I sprayed it on my windshield and windows and VOILA!, the ice was gone and I was good to go.  My windows weren’t frozen in place so I could roll them down to open the gate and get out of the parking lot, and I could see perfectly my whole drive home.  Time to buy about a dozen cans so I don’t have to worry about freezing my fingers off while scraping anymore!
