Things I’ve learned this week on wards

  • Having good interns really means the upper level gets to be a bum.  It’s a good feeling.  (I actually learned this the first time I was an upper level, but it’s reinforced each time I’m back on wards.)
  • Having good medical students means the interns almost get to be bums too.  Again, something I’d learned in the past that was reinforced this week.
  • Stomach ulcers hurt.  According to Saurabh, who claims to have done a presentation on gastric ulcers in adults, I’m not supposed to eat sugary things because the glucose will only “feed the H. pylori.”  Damn you, H. pylori!!!
  • Credentialing is a bee-otch.  I’ve filled out the same info thrice, for OU Physicians, St. Anthony’s, and HCA, only to find out the HCA one has a copy that’s partially filled out (nice) but the stuff they’ve filled out is mostly wrong (not so nice).  Like…my name.  And my address.  And my phone number.  Ugh.
  • I have a much better score so far on the 2009 Prep questions than the 2008 ones (currently rockin’ 80% correct!).  Makes me feel better about what I know.  Dr. Khoury’s neurology lesson on Friday afternoon though…that was a good reminder that there’s still quite a bit left to learn.
  • I’m apparently stressed to the point of constantly having work-related dreams (as if you hadn’t figured out the stressed bit from the previously mentioned ulcers).  When Evan woke me up this morning and asked when I needed to get out of bed, my reply was, “I was just thinking about Mendelian genetics and variable penetrance.”  Huh???  Also, I dreamt about nephrology during my nap today.
