So…oops! I started my blog during intern year with every intention to blog daily, keeping a record (mostly for me to look back upon) of the time spent in residency. I mostly stuck with it, but with my vacation and the very busy month of June, I didn’t blog at all during the last 6 [...]

I’m presenting for Zitelli club tomorrow and it’ll be my last presentation ever for residency, and it’s the last work thing I have to do before Evan and I fly out Sunday morning! Then 4 clinic days and 18 ER shifts and I’m all done. I can’t believe the numbers have become manageable already! And [...]

I finished reading A Game of Thrones in about a week and now am well into the 2nd book in the series, A Clash of Kings. I’ve somehow managed to study, work out, AND read every day since this rotation started and it’s been awesome. So…is this what I have to look forward to in [...]

Only 34 more hours at work, to be exact, until I’m free to relax and enjoy! Not getting to work with Gottipati for the full two weeks he’s on service is the only thing about this that makes me sad I’m almost done (forever) with the NICU. He’s been wonderful.

Waking up early enough to work out, shower, and have breakfast before getting to the NICU (almost) on time every morning means I have to go to bed pretty early if I want a decent amount of sleep. Like, embarrassingly early. Dad has told us a few times how early Grandpa always goes to sleep [...]

Unfortunately Cheri won’t let me get rid of my pager yet. It’s still nice knowing the pager is a completely unnecessary bit of residency now, and realizing that it has been unnecessary since March 4th. It’ll feel so good to get rid of it.

I realized at noon conference today that I won’t need my pager the rest of residency. All I have left are my elective and a month in the ER, and in the NICU they just call the spectralink if they need anything. In fact, I haven’t bothered wearing my pager since February when I was [...]

20 days until I finish my NICU rotation and until I’m free!!! I won’t be done with residency until June 30th but I have a couple easy rotations, no call, and (most importantly) the wedding/vacation between May 3rd and then, so it’ll be a cake walk compared to the past few months.

Last call, last hard rotation, a little over a month til we fly to Mexico… I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel!

I should’ve known they’d figure out a way to make sure all the NICU residents have a couple calls when they’re on service. They’ve just moved our calls around to make sure they’re on nights when there is a call room available for use. Although that means last night wasn’t my final call, it means [...]

We’re supposed to have 2 NICU calls when we’re on service, but with the call room situation, there’s a chance I won’t be taking my second NICU call later in the month. (The department has 7 call rooms and there will be 7 other people on call that night, with me being the non-essential 8th [...]

I started NICU on Monday for a month, and then I have my elective and ER to finish up 3rd year. I’m not really counting those couple rotations since they’re easy and since I’ll be in the ER next year anyway, so I like to think I only have til May 3rd before I’m done [...]

Newborn calls this month have been filled with non-newborn related stuff, and it’s been awesome. In the past week and a half, I’ve learned I’m no sonographer and I’ve learned crimson paint looks suspiciously like petechiae. I won’t miss residency, but I will definitely miss all my friends.

After tonight is over, I’ll only have one newborn call and two NICU calls left, and that’s it. No more calls in residency. My remaining rotations are NICU, elective (a no-call month), and the ER. Since the elective is super-easy and I’ll be on vacation (in Mexico!!!) and I’m working part-time in the ER next [...]

In addition to playing Lego Star Wars III all day, I also managed to get some studying done (yay!) and finish up the schedule for Jasmine and me next year so we can send it on to Shannon, who will need to figure out who will cover the weekends we’re not working. Figuring out the [...]
