Lots of sister time this weekend!

19 March, 2011 (23:47) | family, friends, residency | By: Gina

My sisters and their boys came up tonight for dinner at Milagro’s and Zombieland, and then they’re coming up again tomorrow for the Thunder game.  It’s been a good way to get my mind off work for a bit.  Of course, now I’m super sleepy and need to get ready to go back in tomorrow.

Cinnamon rolls

17 March, 2011 (21:32) | home, residency | By: Gina

I’m starting to feel the stress of this month’s (and next’s) rotations, finishing residency, starting a real job, boards, and the wedding pretty acutely and though I usually handle it well, it was a bit more difficult tonight to keep it all together.  So wonderful, sweet Evan is making cinnamon rolls for us.  To make [...]

Back in the call room

11 March, 2011 (22:09) | residency | By: Gina

The newborn call room is now in a different location than it was the last couple times I was on this rotation and I don’t particularly care for it.  For whatever reason, the powers that be have linoleum instead of carpet in here, a sink with no mirror, and no TV.  It is better than [...]

That damn black cloud didn’t go away!

8 March, 2011 (21:42) | residency | By: Gina

We’ve been teasing Amanda this month because both times she’s been on call, she’s admitted a ton of babies to the team.  She was post-call today and went home around 11am, but it really didn’t seem like things improved after she left.  We had several emergent C-sections, a surprise delivery, and then one where we [...]

I feel like I live at the hospital…

5 March, 2011 (21:52) | home, residency, the dog | By: Gina

Because I’m a nerd, I calculated how many hours I’ll have worked in between days off.  (It was a mistake but I’ll write about it anyway.)  In 17 days, I will work more than 200 hours.  I know which elevators to take and which to avoid, I’m on a first-name basis with most of the [...]

Last night!

3 March, 2011 (23:10) | residency | By: Gina

After I check out tomorrow morning, I will be done with night float and ward call FOREVER.  This is a fan-freakin-tastic feeling!  I plan to celebrate by sleeping away Friday…before I’m on call on for the newborn nursery on Saturday

Final week of night float!!!

1 March, 2011 (22:52) | residency | By: Gina

I like working nights better than days on wards, but I am oh so happy my last week of nights (ever!) is coming to an end this week.  I’ve been lucky to have good people to work with each time, but it’s also quite nice to start ticking off a bunch of “last ever’s” for [...]

Things I’ve learned this week on wards

26 February, 2011 (20:48) | residency | By: Gina

Having good interns really means the upper level gets to be a bum.  It’s a good feeling.  (I actually learned this the first time I was an upper level, but it’s reinforced each time I’m back on wards.) Having good medical students means the interns almost get to be bums too.  Again, something I’d learned [...]

Endless paperwork

25 February, 2011 (21:17) | residency | By: Gina

I’ve been busily filling out a lot of repetitive paperwork so I can be credentialed to work at Children’s and St Anthony’s next year, and am rather frustrated that my name, address, and phone number are all wrong on the package from HCA.  And because they had my name wrong, they also had my email [...]

Questions and more questions

24 February, 2011 (22:13) | residency | By: Gina

In the midst of almost always capped teams on wards, filling out credentialing paperwork, planning the wedding, getting to know my interns, and working on my QI and research projects, I’ve also been working on board review questions here and there and have managed to convince said interns to do the same.  I think Lori [...]

Back to clinic

23 February, 2011 (21:07) | residency | By: Gina

Because of snow and night float, today was the first day I had continuity clinic in 3 weeks.  Last time I was there was when I was introduced to the electronic orders, and today I still didn’t really believe the nurses were seeing them until I saw them getting the shots ready for my patients. [...]

ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

22 February, 2011 (20:44) | residency | By: Gina

I’m having a really, really hard time trying to adjust to days again this time and have been feeling pretty out of it while at work.  Last night I went to bed around 6:30pm and woke up around midnight…and was unable to fall asleep again until just before my alarm went off.  I’m happy it [...]

One of the pitfalls of night float

18 February, 2011 (23:21) | home, residency | By: Gina

After staying up all night and sleeping all day while on nights, it’s pretty hard for me to get back to a normal schedule on my weekend off.  Luckily Evan likes staying up late too, so we still get to spend a lot of time together, but it definitely makes it hard to plan much [...]

Full house

17 February, 2011 (23:10) | nerd stuff, residency | By: Gina

The hospital is full, so the people doing admissions (Batoul, Saurabh, and me) are all just hanging out in the lounge.  I’ve wisely spent my time looking at cars and laptop bags while Saurabh has found more stuff he wants from Jetpens.  Apparently I’m leading him down the dark and dangerous path of pen addiction.

Night float

15 February, 2011 (23:55) | residency | By: Gina

Walking in at 5pm and having the pager go non-stop for the first hour that 8 patients have hit the floor is not how I imagined my shift would begin.  Thankfully, Batoul and I are splitting admissions so I don’t have to do all 8 by myself.  We managed to see all of them, tuck [...]
