It’s been just me and Saurabh this week and I’m happy to find that we work very well together. We both know all the patients well, we get our consults done quickly (and we can both talk to whoever calls back since we know all the patients), and our attending pretty much lets us do [...]

My clinic was canceled this morning, which has resulted in something very, very rare for me. I worked the two night shifts this weekend in the ED and have one day shift tomorrow…and that’s it until I start wards on Monday. That means that in 9 days, I’ll end up working a total of 36 [...]

I’m mostly done with this insanely busy ER month. It’s a fun place to be, but I’m ready to be around other residents and to go to noon conference again so I actually know how everyone’s doing. I mean, everyone besides the hundreds of patients who come through the ER.

After a few blissful days off, in which I began developing flu-like symptoms, I’m headed back to work today as the noon to midnight resident. The naproxen I took is starting to kick in (finally!) so hopefully it won’t be too bad today.

Wake up, shower, eat breakfast, go to work. Work work work. Go home, eat dinner, crawl in bed. Rinse, repeat for 5 days. I have no idea what anyone outside of the ER is up to, but I do know I’ve been exposed to more kids with flu-like symptoms and gastroenteritis than I could count [...]

I had 3 lumbar punctures in the ED today, and TWO of them were champagne! (The third had 2 pesky RBCs). I’m starting to believe Paul’s theory that there are RBCs stuck to the microscope lenses in the lab.

I left work on time tonight, at 7pm, and found several other people standing around in the parking lot. People on clinic rotations and stuff who should definitely not still be at work that late on a Friday night. What’s wrong with these people?!?

Despite being a (for the most part) reasonable person, every time I’ve been faced with updating my curriculum vitae I have a mild to moderate panic attack. I stress over its contents, its formatting, I triple- and quadruple-check it, and I make Evan do the same. I probably scare our skittish dog too. It doesn’t [...]

Working all these nights in the ED, with a clinic morning shoved in the middle, is wearing me out. I can’t seem to make myself sleep more than 4-5 hours during the day, so this week I’ve been even more sleep-deprived than usual. I’m off Saturday and Sunday but since I have to work Monday [...]

I’ve become a bit obsessed with coming up with my work schedule for next year. Obviously I can’t realistically plan all the way out to May 2012 right now, but after years of knowing what my schedule would look like so far in advance, it’s nice to have a working idea. Since we get to [...]

Now that I’m in the final six months of residency, I find the countdown (while exciting) to be rather bittersweet. I won’t miss the residency part of the whole thing, but I will definitely miss the people. Not just fellow residents, but also the attendings, nurses, RTs, clerks, transport people, and everyone else who helps [...]

Because I’m crazy, because there’s something seriously wrong with me…I’m happy to be back in the PICU. I don’t prefer it to a longer vacation of course, but I’d rather be here than anywhere else in the hospital. I’ll be rather sad when these six days draw to a close and I’m done in the [...]

We had a quick last-minute change of location for dinner tonight to Grand House, since Travel by Taste closes at the unreasonably early (for us) time of 8pm. Evan, Jasmine, and I got there at 7 and everyone else made it shortly after, filtering in basically as soon as they got off work. Over all [...]

Our 2nd annual game of Secret Santa, as coordinated by Jasmine, went beautifully. For those 30 minutes or so at work, we can all forget our responsibilities and act like 5 year olds on Christmas morning. It’s a wonderful tradition I hope will continue after our class is gone.

Who thought I could enjoy an entire week of clinic? The cardiology and nephrology attendings are awesome and I’ve had so much fun this week. It actually makes me rather sad that this is our shortest rotation month.
